What data can be migrated?

Our Magento to Shopify migration service transfers all critical store data following a structured pre-migration audit. Every entity is mapped from Magento's EAV data model to Shopify's structure, validated in staging, and tested before your new store goes live.

Products

Product names, SKUs, descriptions, prices, images, stock levels, configurable and simple product structures, and product SEO data mapped from Magento's product model to Shopify's variant and metafield structure.

Customers

Customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, billing and shipping addresses, and customer group assignments migrated from Magento's customer model to Shopify customer records with full data integrity.

Coupons

Magento cart price rules, discount codes, usage limits, expiry dates, and customer segment conditions recreated within Shopify's discount and promotions system.

Orders

Complete Magento order history including statuses, line items, tax calculations, shipping records, and billing information transferred and validated against the source store post-import.

Reviews

Product reviews migrated from Magento's native review system to Shopify using a compatible review app, preserving star ratings, review content, reviewer details, and publication dates.

Manufacturers

Brand and supplier attribute data migrated as Shopify product tags or metafields, maintaining catalogue organisation and enabling filtering on the new store.

Custom Fields

Magento custom product attributes and EAV data mapped to the correct Shopify metafield structure no custom data left behind during migration.

Pricing & Taxes

Product pricing, special prices, tier pricing rules, and tax class data migrated accurately. Shopify tax zone and rate configuration is handled as part of the new store setup.

How to migrate Magento to Shopify
without losing revenue?

After completing 150+ ecommerce platform migrations, including many from Magento 1 and Magento 2, we follow a proven process to protect your traffic, revenue, and customer data throughout the transition.

Map every Magento URL to Shopify with 301 redirects

Magento and Shopify generate URLs differently. Product, category, and CMS page URLs all change. We crawl your full Magento site before migration, map every URL to its Shopify equivalent, and implement 301 redirects at go-live. Your organic rankings follow no traffic lost to broken links.

Run the full migration in a Shopify staging environment

Your Magento store stays live throughout the project. All build and migration work happens on a private Shopify store. It's fully tested and validated before your domain ever points to the new store your customers see no disruption.

Map Magento's EAV data model to Shopify's structure before moving a single record

Magento's product and customer data is stored in an entity-attribute-value (EAV) model that's fundamentally different from Shopify's flat data structure. Every attribute, custom field, and product type is mapped to its Shopify equivalent in the audit phase. We don't discover mapping issues after import.

Audit your Magento extension stack and replace with Shopify equivalents

Magento extensions don't transfer to Shopify. Every extension that handles a business function B2B pricing, loyalty, subscriptions, product configurators, advanced shipping needs a Shopify app equivalent or a custom build. We audit the full stack upfront and flag what needs rebuilding before the project scope is agreed.

Replace Magento's self-hosted infrastructure with Shopify's managed platform

On Shopify, there are no servers to manage, no Magento upgrades to run, no security patches to apply. We configure your Shopify store, payment gateways, shipping zones, and tax rules from the ground up so your team inherits a store that runs itself, not one that needs a developer to maintain it.

Monitor traffic, rankings, and performance for 30 days post-launch

We don't close the project at go-live. Traffic, search rankings, checkout performance, and integration sync are monitored for 30 days after your domain switches. Any issue is resolved as part of the project.

Your data is safely locked with Kiwi Commerce

We implement multiple security measures to ensure a safe, compliant, and risk-free Magento to Shopify migration. Your data is protected at every stage.

A complete guide to Magento to Shopify migration

Moving from Magento to Shopify is one of the most commercially significant platform decisions a mid-market ecommerce brand can make. This guide covers why businesses make the switch, the real technical challenges involved, how to manage migration risk, and how to prepare for a successful go-live.

Guide Topics

Why migrate from Magento to Shopify?

Migrating from Magento to Shopify is a decision driven by four things that tend to compound over time: rising infrastructure costs, increasing developer dependency, mounting upgrade complexity, and the operational drag of maintaining a self-hosted platform as the business scales.

Magento is a powerful platform. For stores with highly complex product catalogues, advanced B2B pricing requirements, or deep custom business logic, it remains a strong choice. But for many mid-market brands, the level of technical resource that Magento requires to run well has grown beyond what the business actually needs. Developer time goes into platform maintenance rather than commercial development. Hosting costs rise as traffic grows. Magento 2 upgrade cycles carry real risk and real cost. And Magento 1 is end-of-life, with no further security updates a genuine business risk for any store still running it.

Shopify removes all of this overhead. It's a fully managed, hosted platform Shopify handles infrastructure, security, updates, and performance. Your team manages the store, not the server. Your developers work on features that generate revenue, not on keeping the platform running.

From a cost perspective, the total cost of ownership on Shopify is typically lower for mid-market brands than a well-maintained Magento operation. Hosting, developer maintenance time, and extension update cycles represent real ongoing cost on Magento. On Shopify, these are either eliminated or absorbed into the platform fee.

Performance is another clear benefit. Shopify's infrastructure is globally distributed and built specifically for ecommerce fast by default, without the server configuration, caching setup, and ongoing tuning that Magento performance requires. For stores where page speed and checkout performance directly affect conversion rates, this difference is measurable.

Admin usability changes the day-to-day experience for your whole team. Magento's admin is powerful but complex many operations that should be simple require developer access on Magento. Shopify's admin is built for merchants. Product updates, pricing changes, discount creation, order management, and content updates are all faster and require no technical knowledge. Teams become less dependent on developers for everyday tasks, and those developers can focus on work that actually moves the business forward.

Our Shopify development and Magento development teams have deep experience on both platforms which means we understand exactly what you're leaving behind, what you're gaining, and how to handle the transition without losing what matters.

Challenges in Magento to Shopify migration

Magento to Shopify is one of the more technically demanding migrations in ecommerce. The two platforms are architecturally very different, and the complexity of most Magento stores means there's rarely a clean, automated path from one to the other.

The first major challenge is product data mapping. Magento uses an entity-attribute-value (EAV) database model that allows almost unlimited product attribute flexibility. Shopify uses a flatter structure with metafields for custom data. Configurable products in Magento map to products with variants in Shopify, but the mapping isn't always straightforward particularly for products with more than three option types, which Shopify's variant model doesn't directly support. Every product type needs to be assessed and mapped individually before migration begins.

The second is SEO and URL structure. Magento URLs follow a different pattern to Shopify. Category-based URL paths, product URL keys, and CMS page slugs all change. Every single URL that changes needs a 301 redirect including product pages, category pages, CMS pages, and blog posts. Missing redirects on high-traffic or high-authority pages results in direct ranking and traffic loss. We crawl the full Magento site before migration and validate every redirect before the domain switches.

The third is extension-to-app migration. Magento extensions are PHP modules that modify core Magento behaviour. They don't transfer to Shopify. Every piece of functionality your Magento store delivers through extensions B2B pricing, layered navigation customisations, subscription products, advanced promotions, custom checkout steps, ERP integrations needs to be assessed and either replaced with a Shopify app, rebuilt with custom Shopify development, or reconsidered entirely. This audit is one of the most important parts of the pre-migration process.

The fourth is order history and customer data. Magento stores order and customer data in a relational database structure that differs from Shopify's model. Historical orders need to be mapped and imported carefully to preserve line item accuracy, customer associations, and reporting integrity. Customer passwords cannot be migrated between platforms customers will need to reset passwords on Shopify, which we plan for with a post-launch communication.

The fifth is theme and frontend rebuild. Magento themes particularly heavily customised ones do not transfer to Shopify. A new Shopify theme needs to be built. This is the right moment to improve design quality, mobile performance, and checkout UX rather than recreating the existing Magento frontend as-is.

Working with a team experienced in both platforms means these challenges are identified before the project starts not discovered during migration or after go-live.

Managing risks during Magento to Shopify migration

A Magento to Shopify migration carries real business risk if it's not managed with the right process. These are the specific risks we address at every stage of the project.

  1. SEO and traffic loss is the highest-impact risk for most businesses. Years of organic authority, accumulated rankings, and inbound links are tied to your existing URL structure. A single missed redirect on a high-traffic page can result in a ranking drop that takes months to recover. Our approach: full pre-migration crawl, complete URL mapping, 301 redirect implementation at launch, and 30 days of Search Console monitoring post-launch to catch anything unexpected.
  2. Data integrity loss missing products, incorrect variants, broken customer records, or incomplete order history undermines trust in the new store and creates operational problems from day one. Our approach: every data entity is mapped to the Shopify model in advance, migrated in the correct sequence, validated against the source store post-import, and checked again in staging before go-live.
  3. Integration failure is a common cause of post-launch problems on complex Magento migrations. ERP connections, warehouse management systems, loyalty programmes, and marketing platforms all need to be rebuilt on Shopify. If these aren't tested end-to-end before launch, you discover the failures under live trading conditions. Our approach: full integration audit at project start, rebuild and configuration as part of the migration scope, and complete integration testing before the domain switches.
  4. Go-live downtime and revenue loss is managed through staging-first execution. Your Magento store stays live until the Shopify store is fully built, tested, and ready. The cutover happens in a planned window typically off-peak hours with a tested rollback plan in place. DNS propagation, SSL confirmation, and payment gateway verification are all handled before traffic moves.
  5. Post-launch performance issues slow pages, broken checkout flows, integration sync failures are caught through 30 days of post-launch monitoring included in every project. Any issue that surfaces after go-live is resolved as part of the migration, not as a separate support engagement.

How to prepare for Magento to Shopify migration

Good preparation is what separates a clean migration from a difficult one. Here's what needs to happen before any data moves.

Start with a full data audit of your Magento store. Understand exactly what you have how many products, how many SKUs, what attribute sets, what product types, how many customer records, how far back your order history goes, and what custom data exists in the database. This defines the scope of the migration and reveals complications early.

Audit your Magento extension stack. List every extension installed and what business function it serves. For each one, identify whether Shopify has a native equivalent, whether a third-party Shopify app covers the requirement, or whether custom development is needed. This is typically the most commercially significant part of migration preparation some extensions represent critical business logic that needs careful handling.

Document your current URL structure before migration begins. Export a full crawl of your Magento site so you have a complete record of every URL that needs a redirect. Don't rely on memory or sitemaps alone crawl the live site.

Review your current SEO baseline. Know what pages are ranking, what keywords are driving traffic, and what organic value is at stake. This shapes the prioritisation of your redirect mapping and helps you monitor the right metrics post-launch.

Assess your hosting and infrastructure requirements. On Shopify you won't need a server, but you do need to choose a Shopify plan that fits your volume and feature requirements. For businesses with B2B requirements, international markets, or complex checkout needs, Shopify Plus should be part of the conversation.

Plan the customer communication. Passwords don't migrate between Magento and Shopify. Plan a post-launch email to your customer base with a password reset prompt. If you have a large active customer base, time this communication as part of your launch plan not as an afterthought.

Finally, define what success looks like before the project starts. Traffic maintained at or above pre-migration baseline. Conversion rate preserved. Order processing running without manual intervention. Integration data syncing correctly. Having clear success metrics makes post-launch monitoring focused and gives everyone on the project team a shared definition of done.
